Do you lay awake at night worried about your acne? Do you suffer from frequent breakouts?
If you are an adolescent perhaps your worst nightmare is to wake up one morning, take a look at the mirror and discover a red pimple staring back at you. Fortunately, acne is not a heaven-sent curse, and can be easily prevented and cured with a little amount of care.
Acne is comprised of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. These are formed due to the excessive accumulation of oil and bacteria under the surface of the skin.
First and foremost you must analyze the causes of acne. It is only then that you can get rid of the problem from its root.
Do you have oily skin as well as long hair? Your long hair could be detrimental for your acne prone skin. The oil content in the hair attracts dirt and when the hair touches the skin on your face, neck, shoulder, etc. (this is more likely in case of long hair) the oil and bacteria problems are intensified. Shampoo your hair frequently and keep it away from your face.
Milk acts as natural cleanser. To avoid the use of soaps, you can soak almonds in milk and apply the paste to clean your face and neck. To stay away from acne, you can also make an herbal facial mask of lemon juice, honey, green clay and yogurt. Another way of preparing the facial mask is to mix the white part of the egg with cornflower, oats, rose water and kaolin.
Rinse your face with lukewarm water and use a mild soap to cleanse the dirt away. Washing you face also helps to remove plugs from your skin pore, which is a mishmash of bacteria, sebum and dead skin cells. The accumulation of dirt only increases the infection by working together with oil and skin debris. But avoid excessive washing of your skin as over washing can stimulate production of extra oil and irritate the acne prone areas.
Use a toner before you go to bed. Avoid the use of alcohol products to tone your skin. Since alcohol is a strong astringent, it can strip the upper layer of your skin. This process can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Do not scrub the affected area vigorously and avoid touching your face with dirty hands.
Do not use unnecessary makeup if your skin is prone to pimples. Even if you are wearing makeup, always clean it before you go off to sleep. Make use of topical cleansing pads that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur to clean excess oil. Do not use harsh cleansers and try using acne skin care products that mildly exfoliates.
It has been medically proved that there is a deep correlation between your skin and your level of stress. The activation of androgen causes the oil glands to produce an increased quantity of sebum or oil and as already mentioned oil is a major cause for pimples. When you are under a high level of stress the androgen production in your body is enhanced. A high androgen production may also be a result of surgery, allergy and similar physical stress too.
Be it an herbal mask or a chemical one, always remember to avoid the lip and eye areas while you are applying the mask. Let it dry and rinse it immediately. There are various homemade acne treatments that make use of herbal masks made out of kaolin, mint, lavender, and cucumber. You also can make use of herbal toners like lemon juice to get an acne-free face.
Adolescent girls or even adult women may be faced with aggravated acne problems during the commencement of their menstrual cycle. The occurrence of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads are generally heightened about 10 days before menstruation begins. This is due to the hormonal fluctuations in the body. The effect can be reduced and controlled to some extent by the use of specific contraceptive pills. (Again, please consult your doctor before using any prescription medicines.)
It is a well-known fact that acne generally results from both internal problems as well as external problems. Hence the first step to fight acne is to fight internal problems. Maintaining an appropriate and balanced diet can help in fighting such problems. You should ensure that the food you intake has a high level of nutrition in it. If you can follow a proper skin care regimen in addition to a healthy diet you will certainly have flawless skin.
The first tip to get a clear acne-free skin is to maintain a balanced diet. Make sure that you are consuming food rich in Vitamins, Proteins and Minerals. Do not leave your stomach empty. Consume food rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin B-2, Vitamin B-3, Vitamin E and Zinc like milk, fish, eggs, nuts, liver, and fresh leafy green vegetables.
In order to reduce the inflammation, you can apply packs of ice to the pimple for 2 minutes after every half an hour. You can soothe the irritation and redness by applying a dab of toothpaste on the pimple. You can even use a wet tea bag or press a wet cotton ball against the acne containing a drop of lemon. Holding it for five minutes can reduce both the redness and the swelling.
Never try to pick or squeeze the acne in any way. Instead of bringing the bacteria out, it rather pushes it back deeper into the skin and makes the area appear red and inflamed by spreading the infection. Squeezing pimples -- or "popping zits" -- can also leave behind permanent blemishes even after the acne dries off.
After you have tried all remedial steps and have also taken care to consume healthy food there is one more thing you should remember. You need to have patience. You should give a minimum of two months’ time for your treatment to prove its effect. There are various effective antibiotics that need quite some time to cure your acne.
Since acne is a result of excessive oil and grimes along with bacterial attacks, it is a more likely phenomenon for people with oily skin. Hence if you have oily skin, you should try to keep the oil in control in order to avoid being threatened by acne. Using an astringent regularly is a good idea to get rid of the extra oil on your skin. You should also wash your face twice daily with soap to free your skin from oil and grime.
