Top 5 Best Benzoyl Peroxide Face Washes for Acne

by Christine GlasgowNovember 26, 2016

Acne is an extremely common skin condition that affects more than 700 million people annually. Even though acne primarily affects people as they reach puberty and head into their teens, that’s not to say that men and women in their 20s and 30s are unaffected. According to a particular study, many women suffer from acne well into their 20s, 30s and even 40s. The percentage of men who suffer from acne is slightly lower.

There are countless reasons why your skin might develop acne. Some of the known reasons, according to dermatologists, are as follows: genetics, hormonal imbalance, pH imbalance in the skin, unhealthy diet, or excessive cigarette consumption. It’s an accepted fact that people who smoke excessively or eat a lot of unhealthy food often suffer from acne outbreaks.

If you go into the skincare section of any local store, you will be overwhelmed with the hundreds of different products available. Face washes, cleansers, serums and a whole lot of other products are commonly available that you can use to treat acne fast. If you delve further, you will notice that most of the reputable products share similar ingredients: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid are just some of the many names that you will come across.

In this article, we shall focus on benzoyl peroxide, a very common medicine that’s used for treating acne. Benzoyl peroxide is basically found in different strengths in a variety of different skincare products, ranging from soaps, gels and liquids.

How Does a Benzoyl Peroxide Wash Affect Acne?

To understand this, you need to first understand the main cause of acne. Your skin is made up of thousands of tiny pores. Deep within these pores are tiny hair follicles. The pores also form the opening through which sebum (a type of oil which is produced by the sebaceous glands) comes out. When produced in excess, the sebum causes your skin to become oily. Now, if your skin doesn’t effectively clean itself, the sebum might get stuck at the opening of these pores.

Before long, dead skin cells will be caught up in the sebum, and this attracts bacteria. Inflammation begins to occur around this region as the skin tries to repair the damage, and this results in a pustule or a pimple on your skin. A simple comedone is formed if melanin, a color pigment produced by the skin, is oxidized due to the exposure. This creates a blackhead. However, if the comedo is closed, it creates a whitehead.

Now, where does benzoyl peroxide come into all this? Simply put, benzoyl peroxide can help unclog pores. It’s a simple, yet effective formula that easily gets rid of the buildup of dead skin cells and bacteria in your skin pores. This helps reduce the number of cystic lesions and pimples on your skin. Now, when you start applying benzoyl peroxide, you might notice that your acne is getting a bit worse. Your skin may start to peel, and reddening may occur as well. However, I never said that benzoyl peroxide is a quick fix. Instead, it takes time to work. In my experience, benzoyl peroxide usually takes around four to six weeks to show results.

Let me mention the side effects clearly so that you have an idea before you try any of the treatments mentioned in this article:

  • Your skin may become quite dry or even start to peel;
  • The skin may feel warm to touch;
  • You might feel a bit of stinging or tingling every time you apply benzoyl peroxide.

You should immediately check with a doctor if you encounter any of the following while using a product that includes benzoyl peroxide:

  • Rashes or itching;
  • Swelling;
  • Redness;
  • Blisters or burning sensations on the skin.

Now, I understand that there are plenty of products that use benzoyl peroxide. In fact, you can even purchase a direct mixture of benzoyl peroxide from the local pharmacy. Keep in mind however, that this is in higher concentrations and may not work as well as you would expect. The strengths ideally range from 2.5% to 10%, so you should first get in touch with your dermatologist in order to figure out how much benzoyl peroxide is best for your skin.

In the following few paragraphs, I have compiled a list of different products that you can use to see instant benefits on your skin.

Here’s The Top 5 Best Benzoyl Peroxide Washes

#1. Topix Benzoyl Peroxide 10% Wash 8 oz. Bottle

If you want a powerful, yet effective benzoyl peroxide wash, look no further than the Topix 10% wash. It retails for around $12 on Amazon, and is an excellent product to use for people who suffer from extreme cases of acne. However, keep in mind that this is a very severe product. It contains the maximum amount of benzoyl peroxide concentration available on the market right now, so it might not be suited for all types of skin.

You will need to get in touch with your dermatologist to figure out whether the product is actually suited to your requirements or not. Many people have reported positive effects after using it to cure bad acne breakouts.

Again, let me stress the importance of first meeting your dermatologist before you apply this product. It’s designed to rapidly kill bacteria from your skin, but for people who have highly sensitive skin, it may even leave red marks or burns. Try using it on a small area of your skin before applying it on other places.

#2. Humane Benzoyl Peroxide 10% Acne Treatment

Yet another product that contains 10% benzoyl peroxide, the Humane Benzoyl Wash is actually a bit gentler than the Topix Benzoyl Peroxide one. It’s made in the USA and is the strongest benzoyl peroxide wash that you get without a prescription. It’s designed to quickly rectify acne breakouts. It doesn’t contain any parabens and is fragrance-free. On top of that, the product is also safe to use (highest EWG safety rating, actually).

It comes neatly packaged in a very easy to use lotion pump, so you won’t have to worry about measuring the wash when taking it out. Again, due to the high concentration of benzoyl peroxide involved, this product may not be suitable for everybody. In my case, it worked wonders, and got rid of my acne within days.

#3. Topix Benzoyl Peroxide 5% Wash

You may have noticed that I really like using the Topix Benzoyl Peroxide Wash. That’s just because the product is so effective. It’s significantly gentler than its 10% counterpart and refines the skin, making it smoother and gentler. You won’t feel the need to apply other treatments or chemicals to your face when you start using this one. It’s designed to get rid of all the bacteria and dead skin cells, while leaving your skin feeling rejuvenated and fresh. It’s definitely one of the best acne products out there for people who want a slightly milder treatment option for getting rid of their acne breakouts. Ideally, I use the 5% wash when my skin is relatively smooth, and I want to keep it that way. It’s an excellent product that you can use day in and day out.

#4. PanOxyl Acne Cream Wash 4%

The PanOxyl Acne Cream Wash contains 4% benzoyl peroxide, and is a BPO wash formula that has been recommended by many dermatologists in the past. In my opinion, it’s easily up there with the best acne treatment products in the market right now. I understand most people are skeptical when purchasing different kinds of benzoyl peroxide washes, but this one certainly does the job. It’s highly effective in treating acne breakouts, and doesn’t even cause a lot of itching either. Thankfully, I didn’t suffer from any side effects, and I hope, neither do you!

#5. Dr. Song Benzoyl Peroxide Wash 10%

The best part about the product is that it comes with a one-year money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the results, just contact the company and they will give you the money back. You don’t even need to worry about sending the product back. It’s made using a very small number of ingredients, which means that the chances of breakouts are minimized.

Final Note

In my opinion, these are just some of the best benzoyl peroxide washes that I have used. I am sure there are several other products out there that you guys have used, so I would love to know more.
