Acne; it’s the scourge of the younger generation but also a problem for many people – male and female – for their entire lives. And for some unfortunate souls having congratulated themselves on making it through their teen years with clear skin acne first shows up when they are in their twenties, thirties or even forties!

Countless millions of dollars are spent every year by acne sufferers on all kinds of pills, potions and liquids, to try to combat the problem effectively. Some of them work for some people, others don’t. And experimenting to find an OTC solution to get rid of acne can be as hard on your bank balance as it is on your skin. So, with that in mind, sometimes it’s worth starting to ‘think outside the box’, or outside the drugstore at least, to find an effective way to get rid of acne.


Natural Remedies for Acne – Why Try Them?

With all the huge advances made by modern medicine and cosmetology in the last one hundred years or so some people maybe puzzled as to why anyone would still be interested in natural cures or natural remedies. Surely there’s a pill for whatever ails you, including acne, and it is as close as your local pharmacy?

The fact is though that people have been making use of natural cures and natural remedies to improve their health and appearance for centuries and strangely enough conventional medicine fans many of the “wonder drugs” touted so highly over natural remedies were derived from them! Modern day aspirin for instance shares many of the same properties as White Willow, which people were using as a headache remedy 500 years ago.

Many of the best-known acne remedies derived from nature have been around for centuries too. And still today, even with shelf after shelf of manufactured acne treatment products to choose from – and even some prescription drugs – there are several natural remedies for acne that work very well, cost a fraction of what the “medicinal” solutions do and are less harmful to the skin and the body overall.

What are these natural remedies for acne though? Here are a few:


1. Vitamins as a Natural Cure for Acne

Both Vitamin A and Niacin – a B vitamin – have been shown to be quite effective in combating acne. An anti-acne regimen recommended by many naturopaths – those are people who study and practice natural medicine in general – consists of the following:

  • 100mg of Niacin
  • 100mg Vitamin A
  • 100mg Vitamin E
  • Take three doses per day, with meals

Some stores sell special “acne vitamin “kits but the usual kind sold at your local health food store works just fine and tend to be a lot cheaper!


2. Garlic as a Natural Remedy for Acne

Raw garlic is a slightly smelly, but effective way to combat stubborn acne:

  • Take one clove of fresh garlic and mince into a small bowl.
  • Apply to affected areas.
  • Leave in place for 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Add an odor free garlic supplement to your vitamin regimen, doing so will heal the skin from within as well.


3. Coriander and Mint Juice as a Natural Remedy for Acne

Coriander and mint are herbs that many of us have in our kitchens and although turmeric is a little less common it’s easy to find at the grocery store. When combined, these herbs can be very effective if you are trying to get rid of those pesky, hard to treat whiteheads.  Here’s how to make a very effective whitehead mask right in your kitchen:

You’ll Need

  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon mint leaves
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • Distilled water

How It’s Done

  • Combine all three herbs in a small bowl.
  • Gradually add water, stirring all the time, until you have a thick paste.
  • Apply paste to affected areas and leave on for 10-15 minutes
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • For even greater effect many recommend leaving the mixture on the face overnight


4. Cucumber as a Natural Cure for Acne

You may be used to hearing that a cucumber slice placed over each eye relieves puffiness but cucumber is also useful in the battle against all forms of acne:

  • Grate a fresh cucumber into a small bowl
  • Apply mask like – for fifteen to twenty minutes
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water
  • Repeat every other day and you should see positive results in a short period of time.


5. Apple Cider Vinegar as a Natural Remedy for Acne

Apple Cider Vinegar is a potent natural acne remedy especially since it has quite impressive natural antibiotic properties. Many people feel it works best if you can stomach drinking a “straight shot” of the real thing a couple of times a day but for those who just cannot face that thought apple cider vinegar capsules work as well.

You can also include apple cider vinegar in your topical skin care regime. To use it as a daily astringent:

  • Mix equal parts of the vinegar and distilled water
  • Apply to the face with a cotton ball
  • After leaving it on for 5-10 minutes, rinse away


6. Homemade Herbal Soap as a Natural Remedy for Acne

For everyday face washing, which is of course very important for those who suffer from eczema) try this homemade herbal soap to keep severe outbreaks at bay:

What You’ll Need 

  • Liquid Castile Soap (available at most supermarkets)
  • Fresh, chopped mint leaves
  • 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil
  • Pinch turmeric powder
  • Small Jell-O mold or ice cube tray

How It’s Done

  • Heat soap in a small saucepan over a low heat
  • Stir in mint, turmeric and essential oil
  • Pour heated mixture into mold/ice cube tray
  • Allow to cool for 12-24 hours
  • Remove soap/soaps from mold and use and store as you would any other soap.


7. Acne Diets

There is still a lot of controversy over whether or not things like chocolate, fatty fried foods and soda really do worsen acne, but since none of them are very good for you, avoiding them cannot do anything but good anyway. One thing most people do agree on in that a diet rich in fruit and veggies helps, as does drinking at least eight glasses of pure water on a daily basis.

There are also certain foods that some find to be particularly helpful in fighting acne that occurs regularly and there is even a growing body of scientific research to back those claims up.

Foods that are rich in something called selenium, which is a powerful antioxidant, have been found to be particularly effective to help keep acne at bay.  Researchers believe that it’s so good at fighting acne because it does an excellent job of protecting skin cells from inflammatory damage in general, include some forms of acne, especially cystic acne.

Foods that are an especially good source of selenium include:

  • Almond and Brazil nuts
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Whole grains
  • Garlic
  • Onions

But selenium is not the only naturally occurring substance that you can find in everyday foods that will help combat acne, protect against new acne and even help heal dark spots and acne scars. Foods that are rich in antioxidants help fight off the free radicals – that are in the air everywhere – that can contribute to both acne and premature skin aging. Great – and very tasty – sources of antioxidants include all the following:

  • Spinach
  • Artichokes
  • Pecans
  • Cherries
  • Blueberries
  • Dark chocolate (in moderation of course!)


8. Homemade Acne Smoothies

Staying on the subject of fighting acne and blemishes with food, have you ever tried an anti-acne smoothie? Smoothies are a great way to get all the fruits and veggies you need to stay healthy in general

Green Tropical Smoothie

This smoothie is a sweet, rather creamy treat that contains several acne fighting ingredients. Oh, and it’s an easy way to get more of those essential fruits and veggies you need to stay healthier in general.

What You’ll Need

  • Handful of fresh spinach
  • Handful of fresh kale
  • 1 peeled banana
  • 1/2 tin pineapple chunks/1/4 fresh pineapple, chunked
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • Ice cubes

How It’s Done

  • Add ice cubes to your blender first
  • Add remaining ingredients
  • Blend until completely smooth
  • Drink/serve immediately


Chocolaty Spinach-Avocado Smoothie

This antioxidant heavy smoothie is a great way to fight acne from the inside while also satisfying a chocolate craving in a much healthier way.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 handful fresh spinach
  • 1/4 fresh avocado
  • 1/4 cup blue berries
  • 2-3 spoonful’s cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups water

How It’s Done

  • Combine all fruits and veggies in your blender
  • Add cocoa powder
  • Add water
  • Blend until smooth
  • Serve in a tall glass over ice.
